Conn’s major awards go to Mensah, Rodericks

New London — Koko Mensah and Connor Rodericks were among the student-athletes who were presented major awards during Connecticu­t College's virtual Senior Student-Athlete Awards Banquet on Saturday.

The event was viewed live through a Zoom webinar as well as the new Conn College Athletics YouTube channel and celebrated the achievemen­ts of the senior class over the past four years.

Mensah, a record-breaking track and field performer in the throwing events, received the top female student-athlete award while Rodericks, the star goalie on the men's hockey team, was named to male student-athletes. Both awards are named in honor of Anita L. DeFrantz, a 1974 Conn College graduate, Olympic medalist (rowing) and current member of the Internatio­nal Olympic Committee.

The other major award winners were soccer players Alyssa Kogelmann and Sara Kogelmann (Tammy Brown Award to the top female scholar-athlete; hockey player Avery Gobbo (James Brook Award to the top male scholar-athlete); women's soccer player Zoe Stublarec (Erica M. Bos Inspiratio­n Award); and men's basketball player Ken Colombe (Andrew H. Chait Service Award).

• Preston's Carsen Keith and Old Lyme's Abby Stone will serve as captains for the UConn Avery Point women's basketball team next season, head coach George Hardison announced. Both players will be sophomores.

Keith, who played at NFA, was named the team's most improved player as a freshman. She provided a presence on the front line, averaging 8.3 points and 8.6 rebounds a contest. Keith was also recognized for her work in the classroom as a Region 21 Fall Athletic Directors' Honor Roll selection.

Stone, who played at Old Lyme and Pomfret School, was a first-team All-Region honoree and team most valuable player. She led the team in scoring (23.2 points per game), assists (5.8) and steals (3.3) and ranked second in rebounds (8.3). Her scoring total was No. 10 in the NJCAA Division III ranks.

The Pointers finished the season with a record of 19-9. The team reached the Region 21 Tournament final for the third year in a row and ranked as high as No. 10 nationally during the course of the season.

Avery Point sailing

• Avery Point Waterfront Program Director Prescott Littlefiel­d announced that freshman Thomas Emery of Waterford is the recipient of the Sailing Club "Top Waterdog" Award. This award is handed out to an Avery Point student, alumni, faculty or staff member who demonstrat­es an outstandin­g commitment to Sailing Club activities.

Emery began his participat­ion in activities following summer orientatio­n and was actively engaged during the summer, fall and winter seasons. He is the 12th recipient of the award and just the second freshman to earn the honor.
