Waterford beats Fitch, 3-2, in volleyball

Groton — The Waterford volleyball team remained unbeaten with a 3-2 win over Fitch in an Eastern Connecticu­t Conference match on Tuesday.

Gaby Kramer had 12 kills and 14 digs, Angela Colonis had 28 assists and 19 digs, Kate Lange had 27 digs and 13 kills and Lily Kramer had 12 blocks for WaLOCAL ROUNDUP terford (4-0).

Rita Sefransky led Fitch (0-4) with 26 digs, 26 service points, 26 assists and seven aces. Marlo Sim had 21 digs and Madelyn Fancher nine kills for Fitch. In other matches:

• Hale-Ray beat Old Lyme 25-17, 25-12, 25-14 in a Shoreline Conference match. Maddie Thompson had eight digs and Abby Speckhals had 11 assists for Old Lyme.

H.S. field hockey

• Olivia Ott scored late in the second half to lead Woodstock Academy to a 1-0 win over Waterford in an ECC game. Ilyanna Rivera made 10 saves for Waterford (0-5).

College honors

• A pair of Avery Point student-athletes — women's basketball player Carsen Keith and men's basketball player Dan LaBelle — have been selected to the National Junior College Athletic Associatio­n Student-Athlete Council.

Keith, an NFA graduate from Preston, thrived academical­ly and athletical­ly in her first season at Avery Point in 2019-20. She was named to both the 2019 Region XXI Fall Athletic Directors' Honor Roll and the 2020 Region XXI Spring Athletic Directors' Honor Roll for her work in the classroom. Keith was also named the team's Most Improved Player last winter and averaged 8.3 points and 8.6 rebounds a contest in helping the team reach the Region XXI Finals for the third straight year. She will serve as a team captain this season.

LaBelle also made an impact in his first year at Avery Point in 2019-20. He was a recipient of the 2020 Avery Point Excellence Award and was also tabbed for both the 2019 Region XXI Fall Athletic Directors' Honor Roll and the 2020 Region XXI Spring Athletic Directors' Honor Roll. On the court, LaBelle averaged 2.1 points per game, helped the squad reach the Region XXI Tournament semifinals and post a 16 win campaign. He will serve as a team captain this season.
