Yard Décor for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

- Alison Fish Day Marketing

The color pink isn't usually the first color that comes to mind when thinking about fall yard decor; however, pink is used predominantly during the month of October for those who want to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, "Each year in the United States, more than 250,000 women get breast cancer and 42,000 women die from the disease." The color pink was chosen by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® foundation to promote its programs and breast cancer awareness. Pink décor during the month of October helps show support for those being treated for breast cancer, those who have survived it or to honor the memory of those who have been lost to breast cancer.

ADD PINK TO TRADITIONAL FALL DÉCOR

For an effective yet subtle display, pink objects can be incorporated into traditional fall porch décor to simultaneously celebrate the fall season and recognize Breast Cancer

Awareness Month. Whether it's a pumpkin from the garden or a paper mache pumpkin from a craft store, pumpkins can be painted pink and positioned within a traditional fall grouping.

Another way to incorporate pink objects into traditional fall décor is to use a large pink object as the center of a grouping. For example, stack pumpkins and gourds on a chair, table or trunk that's been painted pink. Drape a garland of colorful leaves over the back of the piece to complete the grouping.

If painting is not an option, dress a scarecrow all in pink and place it in the center of a grouping. Accessorize the grouping by using pink cord or ribbons to tie corn stalks to porch railings or columns.

DECORATE THE FRONT DOOR

Whether decorating the entire yard or focusing on the front porch, the front door of the home is a good center point for any outdoor home decorating project. Welcome mats can be painted pink, purchased in pink

or decorated with pink paint. Door banners designed for Breast Cancer Awareness Month can be purchased or self-made as well as wreaths and balloon art.

DRESS UP THE YARD AND GARDEN

Decorate a section of the garden or yard with pink flowerpot sculptures that depict a breast cancer awareness ribbon or spell out supportive words like hope or love. Small stones can be painted pink or painted with messages of strength and hope then set around the yard in conspicuous places like along the base of a tree or the edge of a garden or sidewalk.

Another way to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to add lawn signs or garden flags to the traditional fall yard décor or display alone in a separate space. They can be purchased ready-made or can be crafted and personalized at home.

DECORATE A TREE IN FRONT YARD

In October many trees are already beautifully decorated by Mother Nature. However, if an evergreen tree is available or a small tree that’s already shed its leaves for the winter, consider decorating it for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Tying pink ribbons to several branches is a simple way to decorate or, alternatively, be more elaborate by using purchased ornaments and pink lights. A single pink ribbon around the trunk of a tree is another option.

Pink may not be the first color most homeowners think of when planning an outdoor fall display, but during October pink provides recognition and support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
