Persistent Waterford boys' cross country team tops unbeaten Fitch

Top Fitch in fourth meet in eight days

Waterford — Aidan Pepin finished first in 16 minutes, 51 seconds and Sean Corman was right behind in 16:59 as the Waterford High School boys' cross country team ran its fourth meet in eight days and knocked off unbeaten Fitch 24-34 Wednesday at Harkness Park.

Zac Gamble (sixth), Luke Bartlett (seventh) and Erik Carlson (eighth) rounded out the scoring for Waterford (3-2). Carson Riley was third, Ben Chidley fourth and Simon Chidley fifth for Fitch (3-1).

In other meets:

• Lyman Memorial had the top five finishers in its 15-50 win over Wheeler. Shane Frenson finished first (18:32) for the Bulldogs (6-1), followed by Grayson LeMay (18:43), Kyle McElroy (19:46), Max Hussey ( 20: 11) and Eammon McMahon (20:30). Cameron Conway finished sixth for Wheeler (2-3).

• Bacon Academy's Connor Wilcox finished first in 17:55 and teammate Ryan Moores was second in 18:12 to lift the Bobcats to a dual meet victory over Ledyard, 27-31. Kellen Paparella (fifth) and Brendan Reas (sixth) were also in the top 10 for Bacon (3-2). Tevian Elezer (third) and Connor Doran (fourth) were the top finishers for Ledyard (3-3).

Girls' cross country

• Bacon Academy's Jordan Malloy won the race in 20:57, but Ledyard had enough firepower with the second, third and fourth finishers to edge previously unbeaten Bacon 24- 31 in the team scoring. Clare Inyand was second, Ella Stephenson third and Victoria Schweitzer fourth for Ledyard (5-1). Bacon is 4-1.

• Jess Casey finished first (21:43) for Lyman Memorial in a dual meet against Wheeler. No score was kept. Helen Blakeslee was second (22:45) and Kristen Goodrich third (25:22) for Lyman. Miranda Pabst was fourth (25:54), Lucy Smith fifth ( 26: 38) and Juel Anderson sixth (35:17) for Wheeler.

• Sarah Johnson was first in 21:48 and Waterford took the top five spots in a 15- 47 victory over Fitch. Abilgail Maynard, Natalie Lombardi, Sophie Marcille and Madison LaForte also scored for Waterford (23). Silvia Chen was sixth for Fitch (1-3).

Boys' soccer

• Daimon Pollard scored his second goal in the 89th minute as Ledyard edged East Lyme in overtime 5- 4. Nick Washington had three goals and two assists, Blake McLeod had 10 saves and Pollard also had an assist for the Colonels (6-3). Cooper Pazzaglia had three goals and Jonathan Zavaleta scored for East Lyme (3-1-1). Also, Jonathan Northcutt, Noam Sokolovsky and Matt Tapia all had assists and Owen Brown and Connor Piper combined for seven saves for the Vikings.

• Flavio Alvarado scored twice in the second half to lead New London past Plainfield 2-0. Kervens Joseph and Dooby Robert each had an assist for the Whalers (2-5).

• Sam Montalto, Elias Dahl and Jacob Pereira scored for Stonington in its 3-0 win over Lyman Memorial. Ethan Fernandez, Drew Johnson and Billy deCastro each had an assist for the Bears ( 8-1). Lyman is 1-5-1.

Girls' soccer

• Vanessa Benjamin scored three times as Stonington beat New London 4-0. Bailey McCarney scored and Rachel Sabbadini and Corinne Steeno each added an assist for the Bears (6-1-1). New London is 0-7.

• Margaret Dunne had two goals and an assist and Meredith Healy a goal and two assists as East Lyme topped Ledyard 5-0 Tuesday night, the second win in as many days for the Vikings (3-3). Abby Belleville and Summer Antonino also had goals for East Lyme, while Belleville and Ella Mazzulli added assists and Lily Massung earned the shutout in goal. Ledyard is 2-6-1.

Volleyball

• Helen Megson had 20 kills and 11 digs, including the 1,000th kill of her career, as Lyman Memorial blanked Fitch 25-11, 25-17, 25-23, putting Lyman's record at 9-0. Callie Nanos had eight kills and Kassidy LaTour 29 assists and six digs for the Bulldogs. Marlo Sim had 19 digs, Rita Sefransky 17 assists and Alyssa Virtue 10 kills for Fitch (1-5).

• Ahna Tuttle had 26 assists and five aces as East Lyme downed Bacon Academy 12-25, 25-15, 25-11, 25

11. Shannon Pierce had nine kills for East Lyme (4-0). Kiera Stewart had 15 assists and Julia Baehr added seven kills and four blocks for the Bobcats (4-3).

• Angela Colonis had 21 assists, four kills and three aces to help Waterford beat Ledyard 25-19, 14-25, 25-23, 25-22. Emily Mitchell had 20 digs and Kate Lange had nine kills for Waterford (4-1). Hannah Avila had 15 digs, 13 assists and five aces, Kira Kassim had nine kills, and Madison Leyko had five kills and four blocks for the Colonels (4-4).

• Kuranda Ruggiero had 24 assists, six aces and three digs as unbeaten Griswold swept Plainfield 25-23, 25-17, 25-14. Sonja Matheson had four kills, four aces and three digs, Kamryn Lathrop had eight kills and two blocks and Hannah Lynn had eight kills for the Wolverines (4-0).

Field hockey

• Ellie Korinek had two goals and an assist and Olivia Monte two goals for Stonington in a 4-2 victory over Fitch. Teagan O'Brien assisted Korinek's first goal, which came off the Bears' first penalty corner of the game, and Dillon Griscom added an assist. Stonington is 9-1. Kylee Wtulich and Bridget O'Leary scored for Fitch (3-3).
