John Cunningham
Ledyard — John W. Cunningham, 77, of Ledyard passed away Jan. 20, 2021, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London. John was born in New London on Jan. 30, 1943, the son of James and Sylvia Cunningham.
John grew up in Groton and attended Robert E. Fitch Sr. High School. He enjoyed sports and played on the football team in high school before graduating in 1961. John attended the University of Connecticut for some time before joining the Army National Guard.
John settled into a longterm career in the wine and beverage industry, where he worked most of his years for Brescome Barton Inc. John provided outstanding service for hundreds of accounts in New London County over his 40-year career, including many of your favorite restaurants. He was well respected among his peers and always trusted as a true professional by his employer and his clients. John had great energy and love for his work and the people he served.
Together for 46 years, John was married in 2002, to Ingrid (Sarges) Cunningham. They loved to travel New England, but were most fond of visiting New Orleans whenever possible. John loved to read and was a great conversationalist, with no detail too small. He and Ingrid enjoyed good food and great wine, which always made for a relaxing time with family and friends. Ingrid suffered a stroke in 2011, and by choice, John had been lovingly at her side as her primary caregiver. John was a hard worker, man of great character, and dedicated to those he served. John truly loved his family, and will be sorely missed by all.
He is survived by his wife, Ingrid Cunningham of Ledyard; brother Mark Cunningham and his wife, Jenny, of New York; stepdaughter Heike Holley and her husband, Jim, of Mystic; his niece Alaina Foster; nephew Jason Cunningham; stepnephew Gen Li; and grandchildren through marriage, Robert and Laura Holley.
Mystic Funeral Home is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to The Ledyard Regional VNA (Visiting Nurse Agency), 741 Colonel Ledyard Highway, Ledyard, CT 06339.
There will be a graveside service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at Starr Cemetery, 88 Lestertown Road, Groton. Friends and family are invited to attend.
