Groton — Joseph Andrew McElwee, 85, of Groton passed away Feb. 28, 2021, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.

He was born Feb. 13, 1936, in Coal Township, Pa., the son of Gerald and Stella McElwee.

“Joe Mack” or “Uncle Joe,” as most people knew him, was a Tool and Die Maker Machinist by trade and loved the outdoors. He passed on his knowledge of fishing, gardening, mushroom picking and carpentry to his sons and grandsons.

Survivors include his wife, Teresita (Nabung) McElwee; and two sons, Christophe­r McElwee of Lisbon, and Gerald and Melissa McElwee of New London. His five grandsons, Joseph, Roman, Andrew, Antonio and Giovanni will miss Grandpa dearly. He is also survived by former daughterin-law Andrea Kenney.

A walk-through visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2021, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Avenue, New London. Respectful­ly, please observe social distance and masks should be worn at all times. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, March 5, 2021, at Sacred Heart Church, Groton. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, New London.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Sacred Heart Church in Groton.
