Stonington — Joseph A. Vargas, 62, beloved husband for 36 years of Sharon (Gentile) Vargas, of Flanders Road, Stonington, passed away suddenly at The Westerly Hospital on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021. Born in Indonesia, he was the son of the late Austin and Patricia Vargas.

Joseph was a 1977 graduate of Stonington High School. He served in the U.S. Army and was employed for many years as an Electrical Technician for Tower Laboratories.

He will be dearly missed by his two daughters, Andrea Vaughn and her husband, Fred IV, and Amanda Magliari and her husband, Saverio, all of Westerly, R.I.; two brothers, David Vargas, his wife, Cathy Vargas, and Michael Vargas, all of Stonington; two grandchildren, Elias and Lia; and many nieces and nephews.

His family will fondly remember him for being a kind, loving and selfless person who had an unquenchable thirst for life. Joe was a family man who loved the outdoors, sports, and family game nights. His greatest joy was his family, especially his grandkids. He affectionately called Eli his best friend. Joe famously always told people as his farewell before departing to “be good.” In honor of Joe, the family urges you to be good and do good, just as Joe always did.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Church, 45 Elm Street, Westerly, for family and close friends. Burial will be private. Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce Street, Westerly, is in care of the arrangements. The family asks you to please consider making a donation in Joe’s name to the Westerly Youth Soccer Association at WYSA, P.O. Box 547, Westerly, RI 02891. As many of you know, one of Joe’s great joys in life was coaching his daughters in youth soccer and watching them play from a young age to high school Varsity and premier soccer. He never missed a game.
