Brian S. Donovan

-

Waterford — Brian S. Donovan, 54, of Waterford raced his way to the checkered flag into heaven April 14, 2021, after a courageous fight with cancer.

He was born March 25, 1967, to Hazel (Sullivan) Donovan and the late Robert J. Donovan Sr. He graduated from Ella T. Grasso Technical High School in the automotive department, in which he found and excelled in his love for cars and race cars. For over 35 years, he was employed by Dow Chemical (Americas Styrenics), which allowed him to support his racing dreams.

Brian was a familiar face at most tracks in the New England area. As a young man, he could be found at the Waterford Speedbowl and Stafford Motor Speedway as a driver, crew, and owner. His love for racing was passed down to two of his daughters, Kaitlyn and Shelby, who competed at Seekonk Speedway in Seekonk, Mass., until 2015. Brian then set his eyes on Modified racing with his daughter Shelby and boyfriend John O’Sullivan at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl and Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. Brian was an avid Volvo enthusiast and when he was not at the racetrack, he could be found working in his garage, even as his health was declining.

For anyone that knew Brian, he was an admirable man who wore his heart on his sleeve and was always willing to give a helping hand. He was a true family man and would do anything to ensure happiness to his family and anyone (and everyone) whom he met. Brian was the best husband, father, Papa and friend anyone could ask for. He will be greatly missed by all.

He is survived by his beloved wife and love of his life, Erin (Young) Donovan; faithful companions, Murphy and Cooper; mother, Hazel (Sullivan) Donovan; sister, Linda Shelburn; brother, Robert (Bob) Donovan Jr. (Lorraine); three daughters, Kaitlyn Lamothe (Jordan), Shelby Donovan (John) and Ashley Pepin; stepson, Zach Ackart (Matt); granddaughter, Josie; grand-pups, Bentley and Oakley, and many friends whom he considered family. He was predeceased by his father, Robert J. Donovan Sr., and loving dog companion, Sam, who graciously welcomed him home.

A celebration of life will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. April 22, 2021, at the New LondonWaterford Speedbowl. In true Brian fashion, the family encourages those attending to wear jeans and their favorite racing apparel. The burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Victory Junction (victoryjunction.org).
