East Lyme — William H. Scaplen Jr., 83, of East Lyme passed away Jan. 8, 2022, unexpectedly. He joins his parents, William and Vera Vescovi Scaplen; his wife Carren Moore Scaplen; and brother Robert Scaplen, who preceded him in death.

Bill was raised in New London and Waterford and graduated from New London High School. He served in the Connecticut National Guard for a few years before starting his long career of 39 years at Electric Boat in Groton, where he retired from in 1996. Bill met Carren at a dance which started their romance and were married in September of 1960. Bill and Carren moved to Niantic where they raised William III, Charon, Joseph, and Catherine.

Later in life, he was fortunate to meet his life companion, Linda Scacciaferro. The last several years they spent their time between East Lyme and Vermont. They both enjoyed traveling and exploring some of America’s National Parks while camping along the way.

He is survived by his children, William III (Collette), Charon Mangino, Joseph (Jill) and Catherine Pike; as well as grandchildren, Billy, Chris, Ben, Kate, Alison, Ed and Samantha. He also leaves behind Linda and her children, Marc (Jennifer), Michelle (Ken) and their children, Hailey, Evan, Sidney and Thomas.

Bill over the years enjoyed camping, gardening, and was an avid skier enjoying the slopes out West as well as Vermont and New Hampshire. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family and was always there to help his children and extended family.

A private service will be held later this year.
