NECC’s top honors go to Mitchell softball team

New London — Mitchell College dominated the New England Collegiate Conference postseason awards in softball, which were announced on Thursday.

Freshman Gemma Landry was named NECC Rookie of the Year and Co-Player of the Year, sophomore Katelyn Lipsky was named Co-Pitcher of the Year and Waterford's Erin Miller was named Coach of the Year.

In addition, Landry, Lipsky, senior Alex Lopez and sophomore Jenna Bennett were named to the All-NECC team in a vote of the league coaches.

Landry batted .465 with 13 doubles, two triples, three home runs, 20 RBI and 41 runs scored in 38 games. As Mitchell's starting shortstop, she made only nine errors in 150 total chances.

Lipsky led the NECC with 125 strikeouts over 115 innings, an average of 7.61 per-game. She had eight wins, 17 complete games and allowed hittes to bat only .209.

Lopez was selected as the designate player after hitting .338 with 19 RBI and Bennett was selected as an outfielder after batting .290 with four doubles, 24 RBI and 17 runs scored.

• Christine Carey's two-run double with two outs in the top of the seventh lifted fifth-seeded Coast Guard to a 2-1 win over fourth-seeded Springfiel­d on opening day of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament.

The Bears lost to No. 1 Babson 5-0 in the winners' bracket later in the day. Coast Guard (19-15) will take on No. 6 Wheaton in an eliminatio­n game today.

Baseball

• Graham Cartwright allowed one run over 7.1 innings and fifth-seeded MIT had 21 hits to beat No. 4 Coast Guard 16-1 in a NEWMAC tournament eliminatio­n game. The Bears finish 18-15.

Men's tennis

• Coast Guard's Myles Decoste was named NEWMAC Player of the Year and Jordan Smith was honored as Coach of the Year after leading the Bears to the program's first NEWMAC regular-season title.
