Dawn Ouimet
Stonington — The family and loved ones of Dawn Marie Svoma Ouimet are saddened to announce her passing after a long illness, June 1, 2022.
Dawn was born in Newport, R.I., Sept. 30, 1959, the second child of Darlene B. Svoma and George F. Ouimet Sr. Her siblings are George F. Ouimet Jr. and Beth Renee Cochran. She was predeceased by both parents; and her second son, Nicholas. Dawn has three sons, Scott of Schwabach, Germany, and Nicholas Cornell (deceased), and William Dixon of Somerville, Mass.
Dawn and her family lived in Newport, R.I., Norwich, Norfolk, Va., Oceanside, Calif., Haleiwa and Honolulu, Hawaii, Bremerton, Wash., and Ledyard, all before her fifth grade at Gallup Hill Elementary School. This created an adventurous and lively soul in Dawn, which she carried through her whole life. She was curious, grateful, intelligent, generous and kind. She had an infectious smile and an amazing, positive outlook on life. Growing up, she had many adventures exploring the new places the family was living and just creating fun with her siblings. Dawn and her siblings had many friends in Ledyard, and the surrounding area, attending Ledyard High School and graduating in 1977. She loved the beach, the ocean, nature, sailing, kayaking and anything to do with water. Whether she was working on her car, helping friends and family or on a travel adventure, she always brought joy and happiness to those around her.
Dawn attended Connecticut College while raising three children, graduating in 1998, with a degree in child development to pursue a career in early education. She later enhanced her expertise with an applied behavior analysis certification. She generated positive impact and met many friends through the local school systems; and her work as a special education and substitute teacher. Many people may also know Dawn from her earlier work at her mother’s store in the Highlands of Ledyard, or in her most recent occupation as first mate and administration assistant of Poet’s Lounge, her partner Darin Keech’s sailing charter business in Mystic, and New London, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Dawn led a rich and interesting life as she grew with her family in the Southeastern Connecticut area.
