James Gula

Waterford — James “Jim” Gula, 88, died June 27, 2022, in his Waterford home. He was born in New London Oct. 10, 1933, to John J. Gula and Catharine Gula.

Jim attended Chapman Technical School and worked at his parents’ grocery store on Jefferson Avenue, Gula’s Market. Jim’s job at the market was to fill and deliver the orders at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. When the store closed in the late 60s, he worked at Electric Boat, first in the yard and then in the shoe department until his retirement.

Jim was very mechanical and had a knack for fixing cars and bicycles. He enjoyed taking rides in the country where he would often park the car and retrieve his bicycle for a 5 to 10 mile ride. Jim also rode motorcycles but gave that hobby up when a deer tried unsuccessfully to jump over his bike but ended up striking him instead.

Jim also loved photography, capturing landscapes, people, and birds. Several of his photos appeared in the local newspaper, The Day. His most unique photograph was that of a pink flamingo who lost its way during a storm and ended up at Rocky Neck State Park, one of Jim’s favorite places.

Jim always had cats in his life. In Waterford he adopted several feral cats, fed them on his deck, and built them shelter for the cold weather.

Jim was noted for his sense of humor and quiet voice. When asked for a favor by a friend he would automatically refuse with a sparkle in his eye and a wry smile on his face. Of course, he would do it, but he first wanted to see his friend’s reaction!

Jim is survived by his sister Jane; his nephew Gary and his wife Debbie and their three children, Meghan, Bill and Andrew. His niece Kathy Spencer of Groton and nephew Daniel Gula also survive him. Jim was predeceased by his brother, John Gula; and his nephew John J. Gula Jr.

The family would like to thank Jim’s caregivers, Sandra, Donna, and Merry who collectively provided exceptional care and comfort.

A short graveside ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, at Cedar Grove Cemetery, 638 Broad St., New London.
