Zaire Wallace helps NFA finish second at Law Invite

Milford — Norwich Free Academy’s Zaire Wallace edged Law’s Ben Girendola 2-0 to win the 182-pound championsh­ip at the Jonathan Law Invitation­al wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Platt won the team title with 189.5 points while while NFA finished second (174.5). Fitch placed ninth (71).

The Wildcats had eight place-winners with Thomas Brunelli (152), Jackson

Sorel (132) and

Brendan Vine (220) all finishing second, Niam Wallace (145) third and William Ambruso (120), Edward Lavoie (126) and heavyweigh­t Jesse Tingley all fourth.

Naszier Matthews (220) finished third and Dylan Beebe (195) fourth for Fitch while Stonington’s Cooper Light, who practices with Fitch, was the runner-up at 170.

In other meets:

• Chase Plourde (126) won all five of his matches by pin in a combined time of 5 minutes, 48 seconds as the Lyman Memorial/ Windham Tech co-op won four of its five matches at the Hastings Duals in Newington. The Bulldogs beat Bacon Academy (62-18), Maloney (39-36), Newington (48-30) and Wethersfie­ld (78-6) while losing to RHAM (45-33).

Cameron Sammarco (170) won five matches, including four by pin, for the Bulldogs (158) and Nehemiah Czelusniak (132) won five matches, including three by pin. Also, Zachary Rebello (182) won four matches by pin and heavyweigh­t Timothy Breault won four matches, including three by pin.

• Seth Christie of Griswold pinned Avon’s Owen White in 1:57 to win the 106-pound title at the Highlander Invitation­al in Portland. Avon won the team title (250) with Griswold tying Hand for eighth place (82) and Old Lyme tying Coventry (48.5) for 12th. Liam Gervais finished third at 170 for Griswold. Old Lyme’s Stefan Ryer won a 13-5 major decision over Jacob Boucher of Plainville to win the 195-pound title while Hoshena Gemme was runner-up at 113.

• East Lyme/Norwich Tech had a pair of individual champions in the Connecticu­t Challenge at Southingto­n. Lincoln Carlson won the 160 title by pinning Jacob Poore of East Providence (R.I.) in 4:58 and Brayden Soleau earned a 4-2 decision over Middletown’s Jesse Baldwin at 182. Carlson pinned all four of his opponents. The Vikings, who finished 11th in the team standings with 72 points, also picked up a third from Jackson Hart at 195. Trumbull won the team title with 148.5 points

• Waterford hosted its annual “Wrestle for the Cure” on Friday night and went 1-2, defeating Westerly 54-9 while losing to Coventry (R.I.) 60-21 and Foran 51-21. Devon Powers (170) went 3-0 with three pins for the Lancers (8-12) while Lucas Gannotti (145) and Braden Sollima (195) each went 3-0.
