Niantic — A beautiful person left this world to join her son, parents and sister with the Almighty. Judith “Judy” Pomeroy Sleights peacefully passed away Feb. 2, 2023, at Bride Brook Rehabilitation Center after a long battle with cancer.

Judy leaves behind her husband Mike; daughter Vicki DeGunia; her granddaughter Tatania Rose DeGunia (Dallas); and her favorite dog Bear. Surviving members of her family are her brother-in-law Joseph Lampart; nephew Brian Lampart; and her niece Wendy Lampart. Her son Michael “Brad” Bradley; her parents, Earl and Doris Pomeroy; and her sister Pamala Lampart predeceased her.

Born July 13, 1943, in Gloucester, Mass., her early years were spent in Gloucester, until her father’s new job took them to Canada, for a short time followed by a move to New London, and then on to Niantic. After attending grammar school in Niantic, Judy graduated from New London High School. During this time, Judy was very active in the Girl Scouts. Following high school, Judy attended and graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in social work, and was employed by the State of Connecticut as a social worker. After a few years, she took a social worker position with the Town of Groton.

Judy was an avid collector

of almost anything. At one point, she had collected about 150 still banks. Along with the banks, she collected a vast amount of costume jewelry, tools and parts to make finished jewelry. She traveled to many antique shows to sell and buy. One of her favorite things, besides her granddaughter, was to load up the RV on New Year’s Day and head to Florida. Summer weekends were spent camping with many Seaport Sam’s camping club friends.

One of her proudest moments was pinning her Girl Scout pins onto her granddaughter when she bridged from Brownies to Juniors. As a young girl returning home from school one afternoon walking up Grand Street, passing by 48 Grand Street, the location of the present Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, Judy noticed smoke coming from the building. She got help from a neighbor who called the fire department — saving the day.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 48 Grand Street in Niantic. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at the Niantic Community Church, 170 Pennsylvania Avenue, Niantic. Condolences may be shared on Mrs. Sleight’s memorial page at www.neilanfuneralhome. com.
