East Lyme pulls off repeat performanc­e in ECC Div. I track

New London — East Lyme pulled off a repeat performanc­e on Saturday night, successful­ly defending their boys’ and girls’ titles in the Eastern Connecticu­t Conference Division I indoor track and field championsh­ips at the Coast Guard Academy.

Brendan Fant won two events and anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay team as the East Lyme boys finished with 149 points to defeat Norwich Academy (109) and Fitch (87), while the East Lyme girls’ won four events and rode their superior depth to finish with 136 points and beat NFA (103) and Waterford (79).

Fant captured the 1,000 in 2 minutes, 38.06 seconds, the 1,600 in 4:33.83 and joined Shawn Henning, Lucas DeNucci and Kai Ritz to win the 4x400 — the final track event of the night — in 3:38.37.

Sean McCauley, who finished second to Fant in the 1,600 (4;34.72), gave the Vikings another win in the 3,200 (9:51.06) while Thomas Matlock won the shot put with a throw of 51 feet, 10 inches and the 4x720 relay of Mason Hintze, Maddox Grillo-Smith, Finian Gates and Nathan Bergman was victorious in 8:18.32.

The East Lyme girls, meanwhile, picked up individual victories from Kennedy Holsapple in the 3,200 (12:29.44), Sandra Kirvelevic­ius in the shot put (34-4.5) and Lacey-Lee Keramidas in the pole vault (9 feet), as well as a win by their 4x180 relay team of Kaylee Knapp, Riddhi Venkatesh, Ava Pitruzzell­o and Sydney Arustei in 1:39.18.

The girls’ meet also produced the only two double-winners of the night as New London’s Darielys Arnold captured the 55 dash (7.32) and long jump (17-0.5) and Waterford’s Avery Maiese won the 1,000 (3:10.71) and 1,600 (5:36.20).

Other winners in the girls’ meet were NFA’s Sofia Ayer in the 600 (1:46.26), New London’s Kmara Royster in the 55 hurdles (9.28), Fitch’s Sydney Post in the high jump (4-10) and Woodstock Academy’s Juliet Allard in the 300 (44.45).

NFA also had two winning relays with Leah Burchman, Caroline Holmberg, Hayleigh Young and Emma McAvoy capturing the 1,400 sprint medley (4:08.25) and Sofia Ayer, Alyssa Newson, Karina Chan and Chloe Senat in the 4x400 (4:25.85). Woodstock, meanwhile, picked up a win in the 4x720 relay with Sydney Lord, Tessa Brown, Olivia Tracy and Julia Coye finishing in 9:45.72.

In the boys’ meet, Fitch won three individual events and two relays. Charles Cabusao captured the 300 (38.26) for the Falcons with Gianni Colebut winning the high jump (58), Zayshawn Griffin the long jump (20-2), Charles Tarbox, Bernard Drayton, Calvin McCoy and Nimyel Gamboa the 4x180 relay (1:27.76) and Tarbox, Gamboa, Amill Houston and Ryan Dunning the sprint medley (3:24.42).

Elliot Childs had Waterford’s lone win in the 55 hurdles (8.52) while NFA picked up victories from Kyle Kornacki in the 600 (1:26.21), Nehemiah York in the 55 dash (6.81) and Gabe Weber in the pole vault (11-6).
