Being versatile

-

Versatility is a by-definition characteristic of the United States Coast Guard Band, an esteemed outfit required to perform all sorts of music for all sorts of occasions.

This explains why they can be so creative and varied in their own concerts. On Sunday, for example, under the direction of assistant director Chief Warrant Officer Jeffrey Spenner, the band presents a program called “Song and Dance.”

Expect pieces from Sousa, Grainger, Bach, Philip Sparke, Ives, Bach and Dorothy Chang.

And musician 1st class Ryan Foley’s flute playing will be featured on Cecile Chaminade’s “Concertino.”

The concert takes place Sunday afternoon in Leamy Hall on the campus of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London.
