Groton — Edna Rita (Couming) Goode, age 83, passed away suddenly Feb. 8, 2023, at her home in Groton. Edna was born to the late Thomas and Rita Couming in Worcester, Mass., April 28, 1939.
She graduated from St. Patrick School in Roxbury, Mass., in 1957, and received her BA in business from
Post University in Waterbury. Edna married the late
USN LTCDR Eugene Goode in 1957, and spent many years being a devout wife and mother of their children, while moving between Navy bases around the United States, including Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Seattle, Wash.; Groton, Goose Creek, S.C.; Key West, Fla., and San Francisco, Calif., often moving singlehandedly with children in tow, including her late daughter Karen (married to Michael Ehnot), and her surviving children, Theresa, Patricia (married to Herbert Schmidt), Stephen and David (married to Liz Castillo).
During these times, Edna worked in various positions for the Naval Exchange and, after her divorce, supported her children by working for The Hartford Insurance and Southern New England Telephone companies, while attending school at Mitchell College in New London, and then Post University — graduating magna cum laude.
Edna was a faithful and devout member of the Catholic Church, dedicating her time in the Lay Ministries of the Norwich Diocese, and spending much of her time at St. Mary’s in New London, shepherding people to the faith and providing hospice to the elderly in Southeastern Connecticut. Her support of both the living and unborn impacted and saved many. She was an inspiration who brought love, happiness and shenanigans to all who knew her, including her five children, 15 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, parents, her late sister Marian, her late brother Thomas, her other siblings, Rosemary, Bernard, Peter, and Paul, and all their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic. A Holy Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 181 Elizabeth St., in Norwich. A private graveside burial will be held Saturday, to lay her with her beloved daughter Karen, who is embracing her now. Edna chose life eternal. “Sacred Heart of Jesus I place my trust in you.” The family invites you to visit www.mysticfuneralhome.com to leave an online note of condolence.
