George H. Kleven

-

It is with great Waterford — sadness that we announce the passing of George Harry Kleven of Waterford on Jan. 29, 2023, at the age of 88 after a six-year battle with cancer. George passed away peacefully at his home and will be remembered by his wife of over 57 years, Gabrielle Kleven. George was born Dec. 13, 1934, in New London, the only son of Gunvald and Helen (Swenson) Kleven.

At age 21 he was drafted into the Army and eventually returned to Waterford following his honorable discharge to take up the family contracting business, Gunvald Kleven & Son, with his father. During his years as a contractor, he built many local homes and businesses in addition to building the original gazebo still standing today at the Civic Triangle in Waterford.

George was a man of many interests and talents, including spending time on the water with his boat, the Viking; photography; playing instruments (particularly the piano and accordion); traveling; and woodcarving. He always had a smile on his face and made himself available to anyone who needed help. George served on the police commission in the Town of Waterford for 14 years and was a past member of the RTM. He was also a proud Mason and Shriner active in the Motor Patrol and serving as the Potentate of the Sphinx temple in 1989.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by his daughter Kristina of Waterford; and his son Gunnar (Ines). He is also survived by three grandsons, Erik, Viggo and Vidar, whom he loved and was extremely proud of.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to his hospice team, especially Nancy and Jim, throughout this difficult time. We are forever grateful that you were able to help us.

Services will be private.
