Mitchell men, women fall in NCAA openers

Baltimore — Mitchell College saw its season come to an end on Friday night, falling 89-71 to host Johns Hopkins University in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament.

Waterford's Mikey Buscetto led the Mariners, who finish 23-5, with a game-high 24 points to go along with five assists, four rebounds, and two steals and Alfonzo Stokes had 23 points and seven rebounds. John Windley led Johns Hopkins with 23 points.

Mitchell trailed 36-34 at halftime but Johns Hopkins scored the first seven points of the second half and led by as much as 22. Mitchell, making its fourth NCAA tourney appearance and second straight, is still looking for its first NCAA victory.

Women’s basketball

• Host DeSales pulled away in the fourth quarter, beating Mitchell College 78-60 in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament at Center Valley, Pa. Amina Wiley led Mitchell with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Dede Stevenson scored 12, Na'Jae White had nine points, Yasmine Santos had seven rebounds and New London's Jamya Beddoe had four rebounds for the Mariners, who finish 18-10.

Men’s lacrosse

• Connecticu­t College opened its season with a 12-11 overtime loss to Endicott. Endicott's Matthew DiLorenzo scored 16 seconds into overtime for the win. Jared Rainville had four goals and an assist for the Camels, while Liam Horkan had two goals and an assist and JJ Ford and Patrick Atkins each had a goal and two assists.

Baseball

• Ben Huber doubled twice as UConn beat host Florida Atlantic 6-4 in the first of a three-game series in Boca Raton. Huber was 3-for4 and scored three runs, Dominic Freeberger was 2-for-3 with a double and Bryan Padilla drove in two runs for the Huskies (4-3).
