Groton — Philip “Phil” Mazzella of Mumford Cove passed away peacefully, in his home, with his beloved wife Jean at his side Thursday, March 2, 2023. He was born in Groton, the son of Vincenzo and Rose Romano Mazzella

Philip married Jean Simmons June 24, 1961, in Groton. Phil graduated from Mitchell College and New London Business School. He served in the U.S. Navy and worked at Electric Boat Company retiring in 1992 as a manager of materials. He had a very active career at Electric Boat; and he was an avid skier and boater.

Jean is his only immediate survivor. He was predecease­d by his brothers, Joseph, Silverio and Anthony Mazzella; and his sisters, Rita Ceravola, Marie Moyer and Lucy Acampora.

Jean would like to give a heartfelt thank you to all who helped care for Phil, especially Johenny, Josepha and Carolyn.

Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 7, at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point Road. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, New London. Visiting hours will be from 3 until 5 p.m. Monday at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. In remembranc­e of Philip Mazzella’s life, the family asks that charitable donations be made to the Melanoma and Brain Metastasis Research Fund at Yale Cancer Center.
