Coast Guard baseball team wins its opener behind Madden

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Parker Madden homered and drove in six runs as the Coast Guard baseball team opened its season with a 9-4 win over Eastern Nazarene on Sunday.

Madden, who hit a grand slam in the fourth inning, also doubled. John Carroll was 3-for-4 and scored three runs and Greg Boland was 2-for-5 and scored twice for the Bears. John Thigpen and Raymond Priddy, who earned the win in relief, combined to pitch a five-hitter.

In other games:

• Ben Huber was 3-for-4 and drove in three runs as UConn beat Florida Atlantic 8-2Dominic Freeberger hit a two-run homer, Maddix Dalena had two hits, David Smith scored twice and Huber had two doubles for the Huskies (6-3).

Women’s lacrosse

• Connecticu­t College opened its season with an 18-2 win over Keene State. Aine Downey had two goals and three assists and Hailey Fahey had three goals to lead the Camels. Campbell Johnston, Greta Panke, Caroline Bruce and Kate Coughlin had two goals each and Emily O'Rourke had a goal and an assist for Conn.

Softball

• Coast Guard opened its season with a pair of wins in Kissimmee, Fla. The Bears beat Kenyon 8-1 and LaRoche 11-0 in five innings. Isabella Shroyer pitched a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts against Kenyon and Walker allowed one hit with seven strikeouts against LaRoche.

Lillia Farlow 5-for-7 with three RBI, two homers, five runs scored and a double to pace Coast Guard's offense and Shroyer had four hits, three RBI and scored three runs.

• UConn swept a doublehead­er from Iona at the Liberty Invitation­al, winning the opener 5-3 and the second game 8-3. Grace Jenkins had five hits in the two games for the Huskies (10-6). Taylor Zatyk doubled and drove in four runs in Game 2.

Women’s water polo

• Conn College opened its season by splitting two games on Saturday. The Camels beat Utica 15-9 and lost to Carthage 10-9.

Gigi Sandull had four goals and Ainsley Cornwall and Anna Taylor had three goals each in the win and Emma Luna scored six goals against Carthage.

Men’s hockey

• UConn is the No. 4 seed in the Hockey East tournament.

The Huskies host No. 5 UMass Lowell in a quarterfin­al on Saturday at 4 p.m.
