Born in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John and Johanna (Miller) Matthews. She graduated from Immaculata College in 1961 and then married her late husband, Captain Donald R. Ferrier, USN.

She served as a Navy wife for 28 years, in which time she was responsible for moving the family over a dozen times including a trip from Hawaii, where young children have shorts and T-shirts and no shoes, to Maine, where coats, mittens, hats, and boots were a necessity. She arranged the packing and unpacking of household goods, buying and selling of houses and getting the family situated in the new locations. Almost unfailingly, she had to do this while Don was out to sea. During this time, she also worked as a real estate agent, as an administrative assistant at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and co-owner of a downtown Mystic store. After the Navy, she and Don moved to Colorado, where she volunteered at the Boulder Museum of History, running their store. Then in 1998, they returned home to Mystic.

Mary was a great cook and could throw fabulous parties. Her family will miss her hosting the holiday gatherings and the wonderful meals she prepared. She was also active at Saint Patrick’s Church and the Daughters of Isabella.

She leaves four children: Denise M. Arnott of Salem, Lisa M. Stevens and her husband, Robert, of Mystic, Michael R. Ferrier of Springfield, Mass., and Matthew J. Ferrier and his wife, Heidi, of Mystic; and eight grandchildren: Victoria, Matthew and John Stevens, Aeara, Steven, and Madison Arnott and Nathaniel and Daniel Ferrier.

Her family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 10, at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, (51 Williams Ave.) Mystic. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 11, at St. Patrick Church, 32 East Main St., Mystic. Her burial will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Masonicare Foundation of Connecticut at Masonicare.org or to the Daughters of Isabella in Mystic, 20 Hinckley St., Mystic, CT 06355.
