March Madness and other springtime subjects
March madness is in full swing in The Day sports department and newsroom.
Sportswriters Gavin Keefe and Vickie Fulkerson are in place in Las Vegas and Seattle, respectively, as both the UConn men and women vie for the NCAA championship. We cover UConn basketball throughout the season and we’re thrilled that staff can travel to the tournaments.
Our readers are happy, too, that their local paper is covering the tournaments, as noted in the comments on Keefe’s latest story from Las Vegas.
“Go Huskies. And thanks to The Day and Gavin Keefe for the in person reporting rather than a wire service feed,” wrote reader Thomas Moriarty, in part, in a comment.
“Another dominant win vs a non-conference opponent. Psyched for Saturday. And kudos to the Day for sending Gavin to Vegas!” wrote commenter Paul McCary.
By the way, if you see Fulkerson in Seattle, or in a local high school gym or field when the tournament’s over, congratulate her for her upcoming induction into the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
While Gavin and Vickie are on the road, other staffers have been spending time in the podcasting studio here in New London. We have a couple of new audio programs in the pipeline, the first of which is called “Job Description” by arts writer Rick Koster and multimedia director Peter Huoppi.
Great reporters are relentlessly curious, and Koster proves it in “Job Description,” where he speaks with people in unusual occupations. Koster tracked down one of the interviewees, a tropical fruit expert, after seeing him on “Jeopardy!”
Another of the subjects is a word specialist from the Oxford English Dictionary who commented on Koster’s use of a word in a column. Koster said he met another subject, who works as an ocean floor mapper, at a trivia night event and ... we’ll let him tell you how he met the brain surgeon he interviewed.
This coming Sunday, you’ll see a tremendous story by Copy Desk Chief John Ruddy, who provides an excellent contribution to the newsroom’s Housing Solutions Lab investigation. Ruddy writes about the history of public housing in New London, and in it you’ll see some beautiful maps and black and white photos from the archive.
