New London — Jan DeMuzzio, 79, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and longtime nurse in the

New London community, passed away peacefully April 23, 2023, surrounded by her family at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

Born May 27, 1943, in New London, Jan was the daughter of Edward “Lefty” Yvon and Josephine Porretta Yvon. She grew up in New London with her five sisters and graduated from Saint Bernard School in 1961. She was the mother of Kristin and Matthew DeMuzzio.

Jan’s passion for helping others led her to pursue a career in the medical field, first volunteering as a “candy-striper” and eventually receiving her LPN from Windham Tech. She later graduated from the College of the Albemarle with a Degree in Nursing.

Jan worked as a nurse for nearly six decades, including 40 years as a registered nurse in New London County where she earned a reputation as a caring and dedicated, patient-centered nurse. After 20 years at Backus Hospital and 10 years at Pfizer, Jan finished her career at Utopia Home Care, always developing fast friendships with her colleagues and patients alike.

In addition to her nursing career, Jan had a deep love for art and nature, especially flowers and ocean views. She was also an avid cook and gardener. Jan was a fiercely loyal mother and grandmother who cherished spending time with her family. She remained close friends with her former husband of 25 years, Edward DeMuzzio.

Jan is survived by her two children, Kristin of Groton and Matthew of Norwich; her grandson, Gianni of Cambridge, Mass.; two sisters,

Jean Uguccioni of East Lyme and Jackie Yvon Steenkamp and her husband Fred of Deep River; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Joan Yvon, Joyce Olsen, and Jane Yvon.

Jan will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her dedication to her family and her passion for helping others will continue to inspire her loved ones.

A Catholic Mass will be held at 11 a.m. May 24, 2023, at St. Joseph’s Church in New London. Family and friends are also invited to attend a celebration of life for Jan in the fall.
