Stephen Cary
Mystic — Stephen R. “Steve” Cary, 73, of Mystic, died Wednesday afternoon, April 26, 2023, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London. Steve was born Aug. 12, 1949, in New London, to Howard B. Cary and Olivia Olson Cary, who affectionately called him “Skip.” He married Gina M. Capone; she survives him.
Steve graduated from New London High School and served in the National Guard. He was a cook at Connecticut College for 32 years until his retirement, and later cooked at the Groton Senior Center. Steve got his love for cooking at an early age working at Vinny’s Pizza in Niantic. Not only did that experience guide him in his career choice, but it came in handy for his family get-togethers. His culinary skills would alter an ordinary meal into a feast. Prime rib, lobster, lava cakes and of course, he’d roll out his own dough for homemade pizza.
He was known for his wit and sense of humor. It was that, along with his kind heart, that will be remembered most. Steve enjoyed rooting for the men’s and women’s UConn Huskies, along with his Boston Red Sox. Steve enjoyed spending time with Gina, family and friends. Trips to Maine, New Hampshire, or even Eastern Point Beach for laughs and lifelong memories. He was known to visit the Mohegan Sun slot machines every now and again. We are happy to report on his last trip to the casino ... he left as a winner. He will be forever loved and missed.
Besides his loving wife Gina, he is survived by his daughter Rhonda Cary-Wujtewicz and her husband Michael; stepdaughter Lauren Lee and her husband Cody. He was “Grampy” to Aiden Cary, Lorick Lee and Jovie Lee. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Susan Perkins.
A Memorial Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at Byles Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. in Groton. Please dress casually. Jeans are welcome.
