Gales Ferry — Marie M. “Ladybug” Holman, 96, of Gales Ferry, passed away peacefully Friday, April 7, 2023, at Fairview in Groton. She was born Nov. 27, 1926, in New London, to Arthur and Mary Cooper Marquardt. She married Robert E. “Scottie” Holman; he preceded her in 2020.

Marie graduated from Fitch High School, D-Day, June 6, 1944; then she continued her education and graduated from Rhode Island College in 1948.

Marie was very active in her community and church. She was a lifetime Girl Scout having been camp director, cookie chairperso­n, service unit treasurer to name a few! She was a Ledyard Schools substitute, PTA member, town poll worker, founding member of the Ledyard Parks and Recreation Department, Ledyard Fair clam chowder volunteer, Dow Chemical

Plant community member, AFS foreign exchange student program participan­t, and U.S. Coast Guard foreign cadet family sponsor program, to name a few. She was also a United Methodist Church of Gales Ferry member, church schoolteac­her and held many more church positions as well as served on committees.

Marie and Scottie traveled to many foreign countries. They always went tent camping with their family in many parts of the U.S.A.

Marie is survived by sons: Danny Holman and his wife Diana of Stonington, Scott Holman and his wife Pam of Norton, Mass., Karl Holman and his wife Donna of Groton, and Guy Holman and his wife Debbie of Mattapoise­tt, Mass.; daughters, Vicki Reid and her husband Glenn of Waterford, and Tina Ohlemacher and her husband David of Merrimack, N.H.; eight grandchild­ren: Dawn Brown and her husband Jerry, Jill Holman, Hannah Holman (fiancé Russell Shutt), Sarah Holman and her partner Matt, Emma Holman, Jeffrey Holman, Jack Ohlemacher and Seth Ohlemacher; five great-grandchild­ren: Ethan, Marissa, Sloan, Scarlett and Makenna; brother Rich Marquardt and his wife May; sister Jane Imdahl and her friend Will Vars. Besides her husband Robert “Scottie,” she was preceded in death by brothers, Mick Marquardt and Arthur Marquardt; sisters, Fran Holman and Lois Blaisdell.

Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, June 2, at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. in Groton. A Celebratio­n of Life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at the United Methodist Church of Gales Ferry, 10 Chapman Lane in Gales Ferry.
