Coast Guard’s Cecotti places fifth at URI Heptathlon

Kingston, R.I. — Coast Guard Academy sophomore Preston Cecotti scored a personal-best 4,367 points to finish fifth Thursday and Friday at the University of Rhode Island Heptathlon. The score moved Cecotti to second place on the Bears’ all-time list for the event.

Cecotti ran a personal record of 7.50 seconds in the 60-meter dash to start things off Thursday, followed by the long jump (18 feet, 6 inches), shot put (37-7.25, indoor PR) and high jump (5-7.25).

On Friday, Cecotti ran another personal best, finishing the 60 hurdles in 9.26, and next cleared 13-11.25 in the pole vault, which moved him from 11th place to fifth. In his final event, he ran the 1,000 in 3:02.47, a 13-second improvemen­t from last year.

Cecotti, from South Park, Pennsylvan­ia, was second in the New England Men’s and Women’s Athletic Conference decathlon championsh­ip in the spring with 5,302 points.

Men’s hockey

• Rocco Testa-Basi and Logan Cleary each had a goal and an assist for Conn College in a 3-1 victory over Colby at Dayton Arena. Testa-Basi and Cleary scored first-period goals to give the Camels (2-22 overall, 1-1-2 NESCAC) a 2-0 lead. Javi Ubarri pulled Colby within 2-1 in the second period, but Cole Eichler scored an insurance goal for Conn with nine seconds remaining in the second. Will McEvoy made 29 saves for Conn.

Women’s hockey

• Casey Chesner scored twice and Claire Sammons added a goal for Conn College in a 3-0 victory over Suffolk. Chesner broke a scoreless tie at the 9:45 mark of the second period on assists by Kiley Smith and Kate Hagness to make it 1-0 after two. Charlotte Harris also had an assist for Conn (4-3-1) and Devon Galizio made 24 saves.

Women’s basketball

• Rebecca Oberman-Levine and Avery Burns paced Connecticu­t College with eight points apiece in an 80-39 loss to Division I Holy Cross on Thursday. Oberman-Levine also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for Conn (3-7). Lindsay Berger and Meg Cahalan each scored 17 points to lead Holy Cross (4-4), which forced the Camels into 18 turnovers.

H.S. boys’ basketball

• After trailing by 17 points at halftime, The Williams School came back with a hard-fought second half to beat Christian Heritage 5048. Sophomore guard Jadiel Thomas led the Blues with 17 points and junior guard Marc Macera had 14. Williams is 1-1.

H.S. girls’ basketball

• Elle Reid led Williams School with 10 points and Kate Van Berkel added six in a season-opening 43-22 loss to Christian Heritage. Williams scored 10 points in a strong fourth quarter.
