Salem — George A. Ziegra, of Salem, 83, passed away peacefully Dec. 10, 2023. George was born Aug. 30, 1940, the son of the late Albert and Ruth (Davis) Ziegra. He lived in Dexter, Maine, with is late brother Richard

Ziegra and moved to Andover, Mass. George graduated from Andover High School and received a Master of Science in mechanical engineerin­g. That same year he began his career with General Dynamics, Electric Boat and retired after 40 years.

George married Bobbie Morrell Nov. 9, 1968, and the couple settled in Salem where they made their home and raised their family. He will always be remembered with love by all who knew him, especially his children and their spouses, Jane and Vincent Martiny of Tewksbury, Mass., Amy and Glenn Gray of New London, and Allan Ziegra of Old Lyme; granddaugh­ter Siena Martiny and caregiver, Lucas; along with a host of extended family members and friends.

George lived in Salem for 46 years and was dedicated to service in the local community. He was intelligen­t, had an amazing work ethic, and was always willing to lead efforts to support Salem’s residents and beyond. He was recognized as one of Salem’s first Unsung Heroes and was a longtime member and Treasurer of the Salem Lions Club. He also served as chairman of the Inland Wetlands and Conservati­on commission­s, and as president of the Friends of the Library and Salem Historical Society. George had a lifetime commitment to the Boy Scouts of America as an Eagle Scout, Scoutmaste­r, and District Chairman in Norwich.

Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 19, at Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester, followed by a graveside service at the Salem Green Cemetery in Salem.
