Marianthe Papathanasiou
Marianthe Papathanasiou, age 88, of New London, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, at her residence surrounded by her family. She was born in Dervechani, Albania, on Aug. 1, 1935, the daughter of Miltiades and Theodora Papadopoulos Papayanni . She was the wife of Miltiades ‘“Milton” Papathanasiou.
Miltiades and Marianthe were married Sept. 23, 1962, in Kopani, Greece. They emigrated to the United States Jan. 16, 1963, onboard the Queen Frederika. Upon arriving in New York, they settled in New London, and lived here ever since.
Marianthe was a co-owner of Golden Gate Pizza Restaurant in Groton. Prior to that, she was a seamstress at the former Lawrence Press Factory. One of the happiest times was their trip to San Francisco, Calif., aboard the Amtrak train, which she loved, to visit her uncle Phillip Papadopoulos and his wife, Sotiria, and then continued to Reno, Nev.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her sons, Alexandros (Kristina) Papathanasiou of Clinton, and Stavros Papathanasiou of New London; and her daughter Theodora (Nate) Servidio of Boynton Beach, Fla.; and her grandchildren: Andrew, Sophia, Stavros, Demetrios, Aris, Anastasia and Deme.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church, 200 Hempstead St., New London. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
