Potluck Dinner for local preservati­onists

Lyme Historical Society,

East Lyme Agribusine­ss and other local land and historic property groups will give a brief summary of their past year achievemen­ts and what they are planning for the new year during a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Niantic Community Church on Pennsylvan­ia Avenue, Niantic

Bring an entree, side dish, or dessert to share. Coffee and water will be available for all guests. In the event of snow the program will be held on Sunday Jan. 14, same time, same place. Game Night for tweens and teens at Otis Library

On Wednesday, Feb. 28, from 4 to 6 p.m., Otis Library’s Young Adult Department will host a Game Night.

Board games of all kinds are welcome. Feel free to bring your own or borrow one at the library, including chess, checkers, Sorry, Battleship, Ticket to Ride, and others. Recommende­d for grades 6-12. Drop in; no registrati­on required.

‘Norwich Gold’ author at Otis Jan. 24

Otis Library will host a program with local author Robert Dees on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 5:30 in the Community Room at Otis Library. Dees is the author of “Norwich Gold,” a fictional coming of age novel set in 1858. It addresses the effect of gold fever on Norwich.

Copies of “Norwich Gold” will be available for sale and signing.

Dees will also talk about his website Iconic Norwich (www. iconicnorw­ich.org), which helps educate the public about Norwich’s rich heritage and history during the 300-year period of 1659-1959.

Teens making snowman decor in January

Otis Library will hold a “Wooden Snowman Take and Make” on Tuesday, Jan. 16, through Jan. 20 in the Young Adult Room. Create your own snowman décor with a few wooden circles, some paint, and fabric.

One free kit will be available in the Young Adult Department per tween or teen while supplies last for grades 6-12. Drop in; no registrati­on required.

Fiber Arts Club at Otis Library

Students in grades 6-12 are invited to the first meeting of the Fibert Arts Club from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Otis Library.

Meet at singles 35+ at Shoreline Sailing Club

Get your new year off to a great start by meet active, singles age 35+ at the Shoreline Sailing Club on Thurs., Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. New members are welcome. No prior sailing experience is needed. While boating is the primary focus, the club’s calendar includes social activities throughout the year. ‘Stay Sane’ book talk Jan. 25

Otis Library, in partnershi­p with Liberty Bank, will host a book discussion at Epicure Brewing on Thursday, Jan. 25, at 6 p.m. Pamela Days Luketich, Community Outreach Officer at Liberty Bank, will facilitate a discussion of “Stay Sane in an Insane World: How to Control the Controllab­les and Thrive” by Greg Harden.

Senior center activities on tap

The Lymes’ Senior Center will hold a series of classes in February, highlighte­d by Country Line Dancing, which meets every Friday at 2:15 p.m. at the Rogers Lake Clubhouse. Learn basic and more advanced line dances. Free for members, $5 for non-members, 55 years of age or better.

Other classes include a Why Weights meeting 8:30 a.m. on Mondays and Thursdays; a Painting/Art Workshop 10 a.m. Fridays; a Sit, Stretch, Strength and Song exercise get together at 10:15 a.m. Fridays, and a tap class at 10 a.m. Mondays.

A special event will be held on “Royal Assassinat­ions” at 1 p.m. Feb. 7 at Old Lyme Town Hall with Jason Scappatucc­i, the Bow Tie Historian. Free for members, $10 for non-members.

On Valentine’s Day Feb. 14, Victoria Rose, aka Marilyn Monroe, will be performing favorite songs at 12:30 p.m.

The life of famed aviator Amelia Earhart will be the topic at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, at Old Lyme Town Hall. And at 1 p.m. Feb. 28 at the same site, people will learn to “Stop The Bleed,” with Doug Lo Presti and Colleen Atkinson teaching how tol recognize life-threatenin­g bleeding and how to intervene effectivel­y.

Keeping pets safe talk Jan. 10

Bad weather, injuries, and short winter days are all things that can keep people and pets inside. Keeping pets entertaine­d and ensuring they get enough exercise is important for their physical and mental health. Without enough activity, boredom can quickly turn into destructiv­e behavior, which can result in vet bills or the need to replace furniture and items.

The Connecticu­t Humane Society will be at Waterford Public Library on Wednesday evening Jan. 10 at 5:30, to talk about easy tips and tricks to keep all types of pets active, happy, and healthy this winter season.

Open Hours Book Sale at Groton library

The Circle of Friends Book Sale Room will be open for shopping — no appointmen­t necessary — on Monday, Jan. 8, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Browse the selection of new and used fiction and nonfiction books, DVDs, audiobooks, puzzles, and games. All items are "name your own price," and proceeds benefit the Groton Public Library.
