Conn hockey takes Codfish Bowl championsh­ip

Boston — Sean Dynan made 41 saves in goal as the Connecticu­t College men's hockey team won the 58th annual Codfish Bowl championsh­ip Saturday with a 3-0 victory over host UMass Boston.

Dynan set the tone in the first period as UMass Boston outshot the Camels 18-7. Conn opened the scoring in the second period, getting a goal from Michael DiMascolo. DiMascolo fed Will Winship, who entered the zone and played a dropback pass to DiMascolo to make it 1-0.

The Camels extended their lead on the power play just 49 seconds into the third period, with Kareem Alazem scoring on assists from Andrew Eberling and Quinn Kennedy.

UMass Boston (5-8-2) pulled its goalie with just over two minutes remaining for the extra attacker, but Dynan and the Camels' defense held, allowing Conn's Cole Eichler to score the final goal of the game into an empty net.

Seven different players record one point each for Conn (4-5-2).

Women’s hockey

• For the third consecutiv­e game, Conn College earned a tie, this time 1-1 with host Bowdoin. Casey Chesner scored for Conn with 8:46 remaining in the first period on an assist from Charlotte Harris but the Polar Bears tied the game at one on a goal by Brett Stoddard which came five minutes later. Devon Galizio finished with 19 saves for Conn (5-3-4 overall, 1-3-2 NESCAC).

Men’s basketball

• The Mitchell College men's basketball team rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to pick up its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference as a member of the league, outlasting Johnson & Wales 67-62.

Jaylyn Clardy scored a team-high 18 points for the Mariners and added eight rebounds, three assists and one steal. Wilton Causey added 16 points, six rebounds and two blocks, while Dontae Pollard chipped in 10 points off the bench.

Mitchell, which trailed 39-32 at halftime, tied the game with 1:35 remaining when Clardy knocked down a 3-pointer, but Aireus Raspberry responded shortly after with a basket to put JWU back on top 60-58.

With under a remaining, Mitchell freshman Elijah Miller delivered the biggest basket of his collegiate career, knocking down a 3 with 41 seconds to play, putting the Mariners up 1, a lead they would not relinquish.

Key free throws down the stretch by Pollard and Kenny Lewis helped seal the victory for the Mariners.

Raspberry paced the Wildcats, delivering a game-high 28 points.
