“I like the SCC particularly because it’s a somewhat harder division. Competition is competition, but the real bonding always happens at, of course the ECC championship, but also in practice because we really get to know each other.”

against high-caliber opponents, helping to prepare the ECC teams for postseason competition.

“I like the SCC particularly because it’s a somewhat harder division,” said Hespeler, who said the new league doesn’t change the value of swimming for the Fitch co-op. “... Competition is competition, but the real bonding always happens at, of course the ECC championship, but also in practice because we really get to know each other.”

“We have to swim hard and we’re always going against good competition,” East Lyme’s Ed Morcos said. “I just like going to other places. The long travel ... but you can just see great stuff. It’s fun.”

Will O’Donnell (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle), freshman Gabe Pacheco (200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke) and Hespeler (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke) each won two individual events for Fitch (2-2 overall, 1-1 SCC DII).

Evan Hespeler, Pacheco, John Chirico, Sterling Walsh, Valentino Tippets, Joel Hespeler and O’Donnell combined to sweep the three relays.

For East Lyme (0-3, 0-2), Morcos won the 50 and 100 freestyle. He beat Walsh from Fitch to win the 50 free, 24.53-24.54.

“The depth, I was so proud of the boys today,” said Kokomoor, who lost The Day’s All-Area Swimmer of the Year Michael Urgo to graduation. “We told them you need to get the second places, the third places. We have 11 guys. East Lyme has 18 guys. The way that everyone stepped up today is what we’re so proud of. They’ve really worked hard. They see their role.”
