Wheeler wins its opener in Div. IV
— Wheeler jumped out to a 15-point lead in the first quarter and went on to beat No. 24 Plainville, 57-50, in a CIAC Division IV tournament first round boys' basketball game on Monday.
Deondre Bransford led the ninth-seeded Lions, finishing with 24 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks while Keith Zardies chipped in 18 points and six steals and Zane Brewer added 11 points and four rebounds.
The Lions (18-6) carried a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter and held on for the win.
They will host No. 25 Sheehan in the second round on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Sheehan beat No. 8 Northwestern, 58-52.
In other games:
• Devan Williams scored a gamehigh 30 points for No. 6 New London, but the Whalers lost to No. 27 Bloomfield, 69-60, in a Division II first round game. Amir Hall had 11 points for the Whalers (17-6). Kobe Chapman scored 23 points for Bloomfield.
College baseball
• Montville's Chas Terni Jr. hit a go-ahead two run home run in the fifth inning to lead Mitchell College to a 7-2 win over Brandeis on Saturday.
Terni, a freshman, was 3-for-5 with a double, triple and three RBI. Robbie DelaCruz of Uncasville drove in two runs for the Mariners (3-1).
Starter Chris Gibbs picked up his second win, allowing one earned run over five innings. Camren Varney worked four no-hit innings for a save.
High school honors
• Grasso Tech's Charis Johnson and Nick Stavesky were selected the the Connecticut Technical Conference Charter Oak Division allstar team along with Daniel Hess of Norwich Tech. Connor McRae of Norwich Tech received honorable mention.
