Commemorating the 1974 Black Student Sit-In Opens Monday
Schimmelpfeng Gallery, Dodd Center for Human Rights, University of Connecticut, Storrs
The UConn Library’s Archives & Special Collections will mount a 50th Anniversary Exhibition commemorating the direct action taken by Black and Brown students on the Storrs campus to challenge structural racism in higher education by sitting in at the Wilbur Cross Library on April 22, 1974. Opening event 3-5 p.m. March 28. Exhibition runs through July 19.

Fun & Games? Beatrice Cuming: Connecticut Precisionist — Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 625 Williams St., New London; Cuming (American 1903-1974) was an important and under-recognized Connecticut woman artist working in an era of tremendous change; she worked in New London for much of her career andcelebrated modernity in her dynamic depictions of urban life in the 1930s, ’40s, and early ’50s; runs through May 26; also, “Art in Play” features the work of Pop Artist Leo Jensen (1926–2019); a companion exhibition to show at the Florence Griswold Museum; runs through April 14; “Norma Morgan in Context” focuses on Morgan (1928–2017), a visionary African American artist from New Haven who approached landscape with a sense of awe and a reverence towards nature; runs through April 7; also, “Tiffany in New London” is a permanent exhibit; hours 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tues.-Sat., 1-5 p.m. Sun.; (860) 443-2545.
Alexis Rockman: Oceanus — Mystic Seaport Museum, Mystic; the show features 10 large-scale watercolors and an 8-by-24-foot panoramic painting, all commissioned by the Museum to become part of the permanent collection; also, “Spineless: A Glass Menagerie of Blaschka Marine Invertebrates,” a major exhibition featuring selections from the 19th-century Blaschka Glass Invertebrates collection at The Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard and from other institutions, runs through Sept. 2024; “Sea as Muse and Fish & Forrest: Through the Lens of a Commercial Fishermom” features silver objects and wood carvings inspired by the sea; runs through spring 2024; (860) 5720711; mysticseaport.org.
