CGA's Randall wins national title, named OW, at Div. III meet
Bauman helps NYU win the Division III title in women’s hoop
La Crosse, Wis. — Coast Guard's Chase Randall became a national wrestling champion on Saturday night. And was named the outstanding wrestler in the process.
Randall, a junior, won the 133-pound title at the NCAA Division III Championships. He pinned Jaden Hinton of Baldwin Wallace in 5:52. He achieved All-America status for the second time. He helped the Bears finish seventh as a team with 52.5 points. Augsburg won with 95.
Two other Coast Guard wrestlers placed. Carl DiGiorgio was third at 285 and Coy Spooner finished sixth at 197. DiGiorgio beat Robby Bates of
North Central 5-2 in the third-place match and Spooner lost to Dylan Harr of Johnson & Wales 3-1 in the fifthplace match.
Also competing for the Bears, but not placing, were Nate Fitt (149), Steven Rochard (165) and Joe Chapman (174).
Baseball
• Coast Guard swept a doubleheader from Norwich University at Mitchell College, winning the opener 5-0 and the second game 15-6. Harrison Milbert pitched six innings for the win in the opener, allowing two hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk.
Parker Madden hit a three-run homer in the opener and Nathan Stafford singled and doubled. Stafford was 3-for-4 with a double and scored three times in Game 2 for the Bears (6-2). Blake George singled, doubled and drove in three runs and Wyatt Duthu, Carson Cho and Stafford drove in two runs each.
Women’s basketball
• East Lyme's Megan Bauman scored 10 points to help New York University win the NCAA Division III national title. The Violets finished 310 by beating Smith College 51- 41 in Saturday's title game. The title was the second for NYU, which also won in 1997.
Bauman, a graduate transfer, played 40 minutes and had three rebounds and two assists. The 5-foot-7 guard played fours years at Babson before joining NYU. Bauman was 5-for-6 from the free throw line and her two free throws with 38 seconds left in the game gave the Violets their first double-digit lead at 48-38.
Men’s basketball
• Connecticut College senior David Murray picked up another award, making the D3hoops.com All-America Team as a third-team selection. He was the lone New England Small College Athletic Conference player to make the team and the second ever from Conn, joining Kareem Tatum (2001).
Murray, the NESCAC Player of the Year and D3hoops.com Region 1 Player of the Year, led Conn and ranked among the top five in the NESCAC in scoring ( 17.7 ppg), rebounding (8.9 rpg) and blocks (2.2 bpg) while shooting 58 percent from the floor.
In his final season at Conn, Murray recorded career highs in points (425), rebounds ( 213), blocks and assists (36). He etched his name into Conn's single season records for points ( fourth), blocks ( fifth), rebounds ( sixth) and field goal percentage (sixth).
Men’s hockey
• UConn's third- period rally fell short against top seed Boston College in the Hockey East tournament quarterfinals on Saturday night with a 5-4 loss. The Huskies (15-20-2) trialed 4-1 after two periods but scored three straight goals to tie the game at 4- 4 before BC's Jack Malone scored the game winner 9:25 into the third.
Jake Richard scored 11 seconds into the third period to get the Huskies within 4-2. Matthew Wood scored less than a minute later and again 5:35 into the period to tie the game at 4- 4. John Spetz had a goal and an assist and Hudson Schandor had two assists for UConn.
