Griswold opens season with a win

Griswold — Adrianna Pedraza had three hits, three RBI and three runs scored Monday, leading the Griswold High School softball team to an 18-2 win over Putnam in a game shortened to five innings.

Abby Matheson struck out nine and allowed four hits for the Wolverines (1-0). Prior to the game the team paid tribute to longtime assistant coach Bob Arremony, who passed away on Jan. 16. Arremony was also the Plainfield boys' basketball coach, winning 555 games for the Panthers.

• Brielle Kenney allowed two hits and struck out 10 Monday as Waterford opened its season with a 12-0 win over Ledyard in a game shorted to six innings. Kelley also 2-for-2 with a double, triple and two runs scored. Emilia Podeszwa hit a two-run homer and Paige Jessuck had three hits and two RBI for the Lancers.

• Reese Main struck out eight and allowed four hits as Wheeler defeated Plainfield, 2-1. Shay Deary hit a double and scored a run for the Lions (1-0).

• Riley Stolman had three hits as Bacon Academy defeated Norwich Tech, 16-1, in a game shortened to five innings. Natalie Verndi had two hits for the Bobcats (1-0). Maya Stimson had two hits for Norwich Tech.

• Melanie Verbridge hit a first-inning grand slam and Stonington defeated Lyman Memorial, 14-7. Cami Brown had four runs scored and Bri Plew scored three for the Bears (10). Rylee Benway, Natani Spears and Abby Laws had two hits apiece for Lyman (0-1).

• St. Bernard scored 13 runs in the first inning and defeated Windham 22-5 in a game shortened to five innings. Angelica Tompkins had four hits, Maddie Scribner and Katie Scribner three hits apiece and Aubrey Nygaard homered for the Saints (1-0).

• Alanna Noonan had four hits and five runs scored as New London defeated Ellis Tech, 23-9. Jadelise Garrett hit a three-run homer and Gabriella Santiago had three hits for the Whalers (1-1).

• Abby Daniewicz had three hits and five RBI as Montville defeated Tourtellot­te, 25-4. Taryn Feragne had three hits and four RBI for the Wolves (1-0).

• Sybil Neary hit an early three run homer as Old Lyme defeated Coginchaug, 7-3. Ava Roth had two hits for the Wildcats (2-0) and Emma Bayor was the winning pitcher.
