New London — Sylvia Marlow Kirsch passed away April 10, 2024, at the age of 92. She was born April 6, 1932, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Lillian Engleberg Marlow and Hyman Marlow. Sylvia grew up in the Queensbridge Housing Projects in Astoria, Queens. She graduated from Long Island City High School in 1950.

Sylvia started working from an early age. At 16 she got a job at Lofts Candy. At 19 she was a bookkeeper at Martin Flier Jewelers on the Lower East Side.

When she was 18, she met her husband to be Mel Kirsch. They were married in 1953 when she was 18 years old. They were sparring partners for the next 69 years. They moved to Flatbush, Brooklyn and started a family. Sylvia gave birth to three sons, Jeffrey, Avraham and Steven.

In 1963 Mel took the family to New London to start a business. Sylvia never stopped working, holding jobs at Two Guys department store and Park Lane Hosiery in the New London Mall. She then got a job at Sears where she worked for over 30 years, retiring at age 81.

Sylvia loved her family and close friends dearly and was always concerned about their well-being, especially her beloved grandchildren, Shaina and Adam.

Sylvia was an avid sports fan with the New York Mets and UConn men and women’s basketball up until her last days. Her other passion was shopping, and there were many closets in the house filled with clothes to prove it. She never left the house without wearing the latest fashion. She was ordering clothes on Amazon until her last day.

She is survived by her sons, Jeffery and his wife Gail and daughter Shaina of Uncasville and Steven and his wife Paula and son Adam of New London. She was predeceased by her son Avraham.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today (Friday) in Beth El Cemetery. Condolences may be shared on Sylvia’s memorial page at www.neilanfuneralhome.com.
