Groton — Carolyn E. (Sippen) Clausen, 90, a resident of Mystic and Groton, died Sunday, April 21, 2024. She was born in Warren, R.I., May 12, 1933, to the late Frank and Mary (Hebert) Sippen.

She attended local schools in Warren, R.I., and was a graduate of Bay View Academy (St. Mary Academy) in East Providence, R.I. She graduated from Bryant University, earning her bachelor’s degree in secretaria­l science in 1953. On May 30, 1953, she married Carl C. Clausen in St. Casimir’s RC Church in Warren, R.I. She worked as a medical secretary until the birth of her first child, Steven, in 1955. As a Navy wife, she moved to Washington, D.C., Groton, and Ballston Spa, N.Y., where she had her second child, Maryann, in 1959. Afterwards, she moved to Windsor, Norfolk, Va., and to Guam, Marianas Islands, where she worked as a Grey Lady at the Naval Hospital. Then back to Groton. Finally an overseas move to Dunoon (Holy Loch) and Innellan, Scotland, followed by returning to Groton/ Mystic, where she resided for 50 years. She was employed by the Naval Underwater Systems Center (NUSC) in New London, until her retirement in 1993. During her retirement, Carol worked as a patient advocate at Mystic Manor for the State of Connecticu­t. She also worked as a volunteer for the Mystic Chamber of Commerce in Mystic.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years. She also leaves behind her two children, Steven Clausen and his wife Nancy of Reno, Nev., and her daughter Maryann Clausen of Norwich; three grandchild­ren, Stephanie (Clausen) Knights (Devon) and Cameron Mills (Lauryanna Oriol) and Summer Mills; and a great-grandchild, Anakin Mills.

Her family will receive relatives and friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 (51 Williams Avenue) in Mystic. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, May 6 at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point Road in Groton, where she had been a parishione­r for 50 years. Her burial will be held privately at the family plot in Rhode Island at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests to make donations to the American Lung or Heart Associatio­n or to a charity of your choosing.
