Waterford — Nancy Egan Vogel of 7 Deerfield Road in Waterford, passed away peacefully April 25, 2024, at the age of 93, after a recent illness. She was surrounded by her loving family, with whom she spent her last days and hours.

Nancy Van Gieson was born Sept. 17, 1930, in Omaha, Neb., but grew up in New York City with her mother and two older sisters. She met her future husband, John Egan, at a church dance as a teenager; and they were married in

New York April 1, 1951. Her three sons, John Jr., Timothy and Douglas, were all born in Hoboken, N.J., and the family spent most of their young lives in the suburbs of New York City, moving eventually to Waterford in 1967, where she resided for the rest of her life. After John Egan Sr.’s death in 1986, Nancy remarried in 1989, and spent the next 30 years in the happy company of her second husband, Thomas Vogel, who passed away in 2020.

In addition to her two husbands, Nancy was predeceased by her mother; and two sisters, Peggy and Sally; and her youngest son Douglas, who passed away in 2020. She is survived by her sons, John and Tim; their wives Carol and Sharon; her daughter-in-law Julie; her grandchildren, Katherine Rotio and Molly Egan and their husbands, Anthony and John; Brendan Egan and Annie Egan and their spouses, Stacy and Josh; Aaron Egan and his wife Sabrina, Jack

Egan and his wife Rebecca, Cody Egan and his wife Emma; and eight wonderful great-grandchildren: Wyatt, Willa, Allie, Laila, Olive, Gray, Maggie and Arthur; as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and their extended families. Her large family was a source of endless love and joy in her life.

Nancy was a talented quilter, whose beautiful works are in the homes and on the beds of many, many friends and family members. She had a lovely singing voice and remained active in the church choir at St. James Episcopal Church in New London, until very late in life. She was fortunate to be able to travel the world and share her experiences visiting various locales in Europe, Asia, Australia, India and elsewhere with her many friends and large family. She was fiercely independent, even after moving in with her son Tim and daughterin-law Sharon in her later years. She was also a resilient fighter, regardless of whatever physical setbacks she may have experienced. She loved the company of her family and friends more than anything and could frequently be found dancing late into the evening at many a wedding and other celebration.

She was a trusted and loyal friend to many, a joy to be with, and a source of support and solace throughout her good, long life. She enjoyed a nip of Grand Marnier almost every night as the day wound down and was a proud Democrat.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church at a later date. Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington Street, New London, is assisting with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, kindly make donations to St. James Episcopal Church, 76 Federal St., New London, CT 06320. Please visit www.Byles.com to sign the guestbook or to share a memory.
