BASKETMAKING OPEN HOUSE MAY 11 IN NORTH STONINGTON
The artistry of basketmaker Charlie Barber will be on display when the North Stonington Historical Society holds an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11 at its headquarters at 1 Wyassup Road. Parking and admission are free.
A second feature will take place at 11:30 a.m. when the Scottish Country Dancers will perform.
Barber first became interested in basketry about 40 years ago when some weaver friends visited his home on Mason’s Island and he thought “I can do that!” Today Barber’s work is sold in specialty shops around New England from Maine to Boston and at auctions.

NORTH STONINGTON GARDEN CLUB PLANT SALE TO BE HELD MAY 11
The North Stonington Garden Club will hold its Traditional Annual Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 11, rain or shine, at North Stonington’s Wheeler Elementary School, 311 Norwich-Westerly Road (Route 2).
Offerings will include a selection of perennials, annuals, vegetable seedlings, herbs, hanging baskets and a great rummage table. University of Rhode Island soil testers will be onsite to test soil texture and pH for customers who bring a soil sample. Other features will include a Master Gardener table where customers can get advice on their gardening issues plus a selection of affordable Mother’s Day gifts.
A portion of the proceeds from sales are returned to the community in the form of seasonal civic plantings at North Stonington’s Town Hall and Village Green, winter wreaths on public buildings, an annual college scholarship and grants to local organizations.
OLD MYSTIC CHURCH HOLDS SALE ON MAY 11
The Old Mystic United Methodist Church will hold a plant, bake and pie sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 11, at 44 Main St. (Route 27), Old Mystic. The sale is rain or shine. For information, call 860 536-2171.
MARIGOLDS FOR MOM EVENT MAY 11 IN GROTON
Children are invited to the Bill Memorial Library in the City of Groton from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, to decorate a clay pot and fill it with a beautiful plant to take home. All ages are welcome, but younger children will need an adult to help them.
No registration is necessary, but plants are available while supplies last. This program is free and open to the public.
FOOD, CONVERSATION TO TAKE PLACE MAY 14 IN OLD LYME
The Ladies Benevolent Society of the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme will hold a luncheon from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14.
The community is welcome to join for some fellowship, food and an entertaining and informative program at beginning at 1 p.m. featuring a presentation by Marta Daniels, curator of the Chester Historical Society. She will be speaking on the life and legacy of Constance Baker Motley (1921-2005), a civil rights attorney and distinguished federal judge who brought inspiration to many in very challenging times.
Suggested donation for the luncheon and program is $5 per person, plus a nonperishable food item for the food bank or a package of disposable diapers for the diaper bank. The meal will consist of pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw, and pickled beets followed by an assortment of home-made cakes.
DEBUT NOVELIST TO APPEAR MAY 15 IN WATERFORD
Author Katie Tietjen will appear at the Waterford Public Library at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15 to discuss her debut novel “Death in the Details.” Drawing inspiration from true crime and the real-life mother of forensic science, Frances Glessner Lee, this new historical mystery features an intrepid sleuth in post-WWII Vermont trying to solve a smartly plotted puzzle.

Katie Tietjen is an award-winning writer, teacher, and school librarian. Katie’s earlier manuscripts won the Tassy Walden Award in 2019 and 2020. Her short story “Ivy” appeared in “Seascape: The Best New England Crime Stories.”

An evening of good fun, food and wines to benefit Safe Futures will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, at the Lighthouse Inn, sponsored by the New London Rotary Foundation and Gordon’s Yellow Front Wines & Liquors.

The Ledyard Garden Club will hold its annual Plant Sale from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 18, at the Lower Town Green,
740 Col. Ledyard Highway in Ledyard. The sale will include a wide selection of annuals and perennials, herbs and vegetables, grasses, shrubs and ground covers that have been dug from local gardens.

MAGIC AT THE MANSION FAMILY FUN DAY MAY 25
On May 25, the Haley Mansion, part of the historic Inn at Mystic property, is hosting a Family Fun Day at the Mansion and the 14 acres overlooking Fishers Island Sound. All proceeds will benefit Make-A-Wish Connecticut to help make wishes come true for local children with critical illnesses.
The day, beginning at 2 p.m. and running until 5 p.m., will include performances, an inflatable obstacle course, a photo booth, games, food and more. The day continues into the night with a family dinner, and a silent auction hosted by Channel 8 weekend morning anchor Sarah Cody.
