raleigh, n. c. Stephen Weiss scored at 3:13 of overtime and the RedWings came back from two goals down in the third period to beat the Hurricanes 3-2 on Friday night.

Henrik Zetterberg tied it with a goal with 16.4 seconds left in the third, after Justin Abdelkader started the rally by scoring in the first minute of the period.

“Got one early, got one late and were able to get one in overtime,” Weiss said.

Jimmy Howard stopped 23 shots for the RedWings— who never led untilWeiss’ game-ending goal despite outshootin­g Carolina 38-25.

“We liked our first period. ... We just said, ‘Stay patient and stick with the plan,’ ” Weiss said. “We needed to get one early (in the third), which we did, and that was huge.”

Zetterberg sent it into overtime when he pushed a loose puck past goalie CamWard after a scramble in front of the net. Ward lost his stick while stopping a shot from Daniel Alfredsson a moment earlier.

“Obviously, that’s the way you want to go into overtime,” Zetterberg said. “You want to be the team that ties the game up.” MattMoulso­n scored the only goal of the shootout in the sixth round and the Islanders opened the season with a 4-3 victory over the Devils. Evgeni Nabokov made 26 saves and stopped all six Devils shots in the shootout as the Islanders won a season opener for the first time since 2007. Martin Brodeur stopped the Islanders’ first five shootout attempts beforeMoul­son put a shot just under the crossbar. … Erik Karlsson scored with 1:35 remaining in the third period, and former Avalanche goaltender Craig Anderson stopped 35 shots to lead the Senators to a season-opening 1-0 victory over the Sabres. Former Buffalo forward Clarke MacArthur set up the goal to spoil the Sabres’ home opener. Driving up the left wing, MacArthur slipped a pass through the middle to set up Karlsson alone in the right circle. Karlsson got just enough of the puck to direct it toward the net and under goalie Ryan Miller’s legs. … Jiri Hudler and Curtis Glencross scored goals 42 seconds apart in the third period to lead the Flames to a 4-3 victory over the Blue Jackets. Rookie SeanMonaha­n picked up his first NHL goal, and T.J. Galiardi had a goal and an assist for the Flames. … Devin Setoguchi scored two goals in the third period, and Evander Kane had a goal and two assists as the Jets defeated the 5-3.
