Colorado Mesa LB honored

Senior linebacker Jake Edmiston of Colorado Mesa was named national Division II player of the week by USAfootbal­lbowl.com.

Edmiston, a Palisade product, made 23 tackles in his team’s 22-17 win over Western New Mexico on Saturday. Edmiston’s average of 14.8 tackles per game leads Division II players and ranks third nationally regardless of NCAA classifica­tion.

• TheMetro State men’s basketball team was selected to win the RockyMount­ain Athletic Conference championsh­ip in the league’s preseason coaches poll.

Colorado Mines, Fort Lewis, Adams State and Colorado Mesa rounded out the top five.

In women’s basketball, CU-Colorado Springs was picked to win the league, followed by Colorado Mesa, Metro State, Colorado Christian and Fort Lewis.

Metro State’s Brandon Jefferson was the RMAC men’s preseason player of the year and 6-foot-10 junior center Alex Herrera of Fort Lewis was tabbed the league’s best defensive player.

Abby Kirchoff of CU-Colorado Springs was the RMAC selection as women’s preseason player of the year. Gillian Foster of Colorado Christian was selected as the conference’s preseason defensive player of the year.

• Wyoming women’s basketball coach Joe Legerski said redshirt sophomore Jordan Kelley has been denied a waiver to play this season by the NCAA.
