Corpas o≠ roster; Rangers claim Cabrera
Manuel Corpas no longer is with the Rockies, but he wants to return to the team as a free agent. Edwar Cabrera never realized his potential, and he won’t return to the Rockies after the Texas Rangers claimed him on waivers.
Those pitchers represented the most notable moves Wednesday as the Rockies began clearing spots on their 40-man roster to add eligible prospects.
Corpas, 30, provided serviceable innings at times for a depleted bullpen this year. The righthander, a key figure in the Rockies’ 2007 run to theWorld Series, lives in Denver during the offseason. He can be re-signed as a free agent at a lower salary than he would have received in arbitration. He went 1-2 this year with a 4.54 ERA in 31 games.
Cabrera represented the Rockies in the Futures Game for top prospects in 2012. A left-hander with a terrific changeup, he worked with Jamie Moyer in the spring of 2012 to improve his curveball. He failed in a cameo with the Rockies later that season (0-2 record, 11.12 ERA), then suffered arm soreness a year ago while pitching in winter ball.
Cabrera, 25, didn’t pitch this season because of a shoulder injury. The Rangers placed him on their 60-day disabled list.
Jeff Manship also cleared waivers and was outrighted off the Rockies’ 40-man roster to Triple-A. Manshipwas used as a spot starter inAugust afterTyler Chatwood hurt his elbow. He finished 0-5 this year with a 7.04 ERA.
