Coffman and Gardner’s changes of heart on personhood

- Re: J.L. Penfold, Re: Kathy Cain, Barbara St. John,

“Out, damned personhood!,” March 30 Rich Tosches column.

Rich Tosches is critical of Reps. Cory Gardner and Mike Coffman for a change of heart on personhood. I wonder if Tosches recalls that it was Democratic darling Bill Clinton who signed the Defense of Marriage Act but who has seen the light on same-sexmarriage. And Barack Obama got Democratic religion and his view “evolved” so that he is also now an advocate. We all walk on shifting ground— including Democratic presidents.

In his Sunday column, Rich Tosches recalls a situation that occurred between his son at age 10 and himself, while pointing out the absurdity of the personhood movement, which recognizes human embryos as persons. What I find absurd is that Toches doesn’t make the connection that if he and his wife had exercised their “reproductive choice” to abort their embryo, the story about his son wouldn’t exist because his son wouldn’t exist.

“Gardner was vocal on personhood,” March 31 letter to the editor; and “Obama did the same thing, right?,” March 27 letter to the editor.

Will both political parties please take the abortion issue off the table? Abortion is a personal matter, not an easy decision, and certainly not anything government should involve itself in. I’m sure no one likes or wants abortions, but reducing their use will result from education and changing attitudes. Political parties are using this controversy to advance their own positions in elections. Instead, campaigning should concentrate on pressing state, national and world issues.
