“We’re expanding beyond the traditional resort boundaries,” Bartolin said. “You couldn’t do this at places like the Arizona Biltmore or the Breakers Palm Beach or the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego. This makes us so unique.”

At the 770-room main complex in Colorado Springs, The Broadmoor’s posted summertime rates for 2014 range from$345 per night for a “classic” room to $840 for a one-bedroom suite.

Bartolin said the Broadmoor’s policy is to not disclose financial performance or operating metrics such as occupancy rates.

“We’re not ashamed to say that we’re quite profitable,” he said. “We’ve been a very consistent performer.”

The Broadmoor’s designation as the topNorth American golf resort contained a surprising element, said Joe Passov, a senior editor at Golf Magazine.

Readers rate resorts in four categories: golf, lodging, food and drink, and service. The golf category carries the most weight, accounting for 40 percent of a resort’s overall ranking.

Yet despite hosting the 2008 U.S. Senior Open and the 2011U.S. Women’s Open, The Broadmoor failed to place in the top 10 in the golf category. It made up for that deficit by being in the top six in other categories, including a firstplace ranking for service.

“The Broadmoor is an interesting property,” Passov said. “Unlike some of its competitors, it’s not on the cliffs, it doesn’t have a beach or an ocean. There are no crashing waves.

“Typically, it’s a super-strong golf facility that wins. But you’ve got to tip your cap to The Broadmoor. It succeeds. It’s superb in every way.”
