In 1937, Penrose and his wife, Julie, created the El Pomar Foundation, which operated The Broadmoor until 1988, when it was sold to Edward Gaylord and his Oklahoma PublishingCo. The Gaylord family owned the property and invested a total of $450million until the 2011 sale to Anschutz.

“It’s a resort that has always had good ownership,” said JohnMontgomery, managing director of hotel consulting firmHorwath HTL. “A lot of these older resorts have trouble getting from one decade to the next. They sometimes slip a bit. But with The Broadmoor, there has been continuity in quality and management.”

Anschutz-funded projects at The Broadmoor and on nearby acreage include:

• Expansion and renovation of the BroadmoorWest complex, including an additional three floors, 31 newroomsand conversion of the Charles Court restaurant to the Italian-themed Ristorante del Lago.

• Cloud Camp, a development atop CheyenneMountain that will include a lodge and 11 cabins.
