OWENS RESIGNS AS CC HOCKEY COACH

colorado springs Scott Owens, the hockey coach at Colorado College, stepped down from his coaching position Sunday.

Owens and athletic director Ken Ralph agreed it was time for Owens to resign upon the conclusion of their annual postseason review.

“I have been fortunate to have had the best job in college hockey for the past 15 seasons. It is time for a new coach to enjoy working with our players,” Owens said.

During Owens’ time at Colorado College, the Tigers won three Western Collegiate Hockey Associatio­n regular-season championsh­ips and earned seven appearance­s to the NCAA Tournament, including a trip to the Frozen Four in 2005 and a return to the quarterfin­als in 2011. Owens finished with an overall record of 324-228-54.

Owens is a 1979 graduate of Colorado College. He was a goaltender for the Tigers for four years when he was a student at CC and is the longestten­ured coach in the team’s history.

Thompson wins Kraft Nabisco

The 19-year-old Thompson closed with a bogey-free, 4-under-par 68 at Mission Hills for a three-stroke victory overWie. Thompson birdied four of the first nine holes to open a fivestroke lead, and she parred the final nine.

Wie birdied the final hole for a 71. She used her driver only four times, choosing to hit fairwaymet­al stingers on the other 10 driving holes— leaving her as far as 60 yards behind Thompson. When both hit 3-woods, Thompson also had the advantage.

Thompson became the second-youngest major winner in LPGA Tour history at 19 years, 1 month, 27 days.

Rain postpones NASCAR race

fort worth, texas » The Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway was postponed by rain.

It will be runMonday at 10 a.m. MDT, nine hours before the start of the NCAA national championsh­ip game in nearby Arlington.

It’s the third time in seven Sprint Cup Series races this season that rain has hampered the event. The Associated Press
