LINEUP HAS MOVING PARTS

-

The Rockies’ curious decision to field a seasonopening roster with six outfielders bore some deck-shuffling benefit Sunday— at first base.

ManagerWaltWeiss gave first baseman Justin Morneau a breather, replacing him with right fielder Michael Cuddyer.

To make it work, Weiss moved Charlie Blackmon from center field to right and plopped Drew Stubbs in Central Park, a.k.a. the vast expanse of center field at Coors Field.

Part of the thinking behind the shuffling was to get an extra right-handed bat in the lineup against Arizona lefty Wade Miley.

“It’s not a platoon situation at first with Justin,” Weiss said. “He’s going to get left-handers and day games off (if he plays the night before).”

The Rockies are likely to go back to having five outfielders Monday. They’re expected to add relief pitcher Boone Logan to the roster after a minorleague rehab stint. His addition probably will bump outfielder Corey Dickerson to the minors.

Back to earth.

Blackmon is slumping. Well, he’s slumping only in relation to his extraordinary start.

Blackmon had one hit Sunday and finished 10-for14 in the three-game series against the Diamondbacks. He’s hitting .542 this season.

A first-inning chopper Sunday to Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was flipped to Miley, who was running to the bag. Blackmon slid in arms-first and was called out by umpire Mike Muchlinski. Weiss challenged the call and a 2-minute, 14second replay review overturned the ruling. Blackmon ended up safe. It was the first replay-reversed call in Coors Field history.

Gnome alone.

Cuddyer’s fourth-inning double gave him a hit in the first seven games. Sunday was also Cuddyer bobblehead gnome giveaway day at the ballpark. Weiss said of Cuddyer’s bouncy lookalike: “I saw that Cuddy gnome from a distance. It’s a little suspect.”
