RSVP Catching up with the social scene After Dark gala supports Cableland
Wand hen cable pioneer Bill Daniels was alive, his home, Cableland, was the site of some legendary soirees. Plenty of glamorous charity functions were held there, along with lavish bashes for the movie stars, sports figures, politicians and business leaders he called friends. Or so the stories go. In 1998, the former Navy fighter pilot and welterweight boxing champion who once owned the Los Angeles Lakers and served as president of the American Basketball Association, donated the 19,500square-foot mansion at 4150 Shangri La Drive to the city with the stipulation it become the official mayor’s residence and a space where local nonprofits could continue to have fundraising events. While no mayor has actually lived there, Cableland continues to be a popular spot for charity fucntions.
The Cableland Home Foundation oversees Cableland’s upkeep, and on April 11 staged a fundraiser of its own.
Cableland After Dark was a cocktail reception and art auction with entertainment by Denver first lady and
was the chairman. The pieces up for bid, Finesilver explained, were all done by Colorado artists and included Ann
mahogany sculpture, “Totem of Honor;”
oil on canvas portrait of a bison, “Lookin’ at You;” and a turquoise tapestry rug that
made from hand-spun wool on her 450-pound floor loom imported from Finland.
The money raised goes toward the creation of an educational program that will enable Denver school children to learn about the city’s history and mayors.
The program, Finesilver said, is being developed with the help of a University of Denver student working on her Ph.D. in curriculum design. It will have two parts: a classroom curriculum with age-appropriate activities, and a visit to Cableland to see a recently installed exhibition about Denver’s history.
The 215 guests there to enjoy an hors d’oeuvres buffet from Catering by Design and cocktails by the Cableland pool included Cherry Hills Village Mayor Web designer
