MICH. TODDLER DIES FROM ENTEROVIRU­S

detroit A 21-month-old girl is the first person in Michigan to die from the virus that has caused severe respirator­y illness across the country, state health officials said Saturday.

Madeline Reid died Friday from enteroviru­s D68, according to Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. Its chief medical officer, Dr. Rudolph Valentini, said in a statement that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the illness after the Clinton Township girl’s arrival.

Five people infected with the virus have died, but it’s not clear what role the virus played. The CDC said in a release last week that the virus has sickened 691 people in 46 states and Washington, D.C.

Judge blocks Texas voter ID lawB

corpus christi, texas » A federal judge, as she promised two days before, has filed a permanent injunction against enforcemen­t of a tough Texas voter ID law.

U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos filed her one-paragraph order Saturday in Corpus Christi, likely paving the way for an appeal promised by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott.

The order was a formality as Gonzales Ramos had issued a 147-page opinion late Thursday night finding the voter ID law to be discrimina­tory and unconstitu­tional.

Man killed by bus in corn maze

hauser, idaho » A bus carrying paintball players struck and killed a Washington stateman inside a zombie attraction at a corn maze in northern Idaho, authoritie­s said Saturday.

JeremyMcSp­adden Jr., 18, of Spokane Valley, Wash., was a role player in the “Zombie Slayer Paintball Bus” attraction at the Incredible Corn Maze in Hauser on Friday night, said the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.

Dressed as a zombie, he emerged from his hiding place and ran toward the modified school bus, but he tripped and fell in front of the rear passenger-side tires, witnesses reported.

Navajo police officer shot

flagstaff, ariz. » The Navajo Nation said Saturday a tribal police officer was shot in northern Arizona and a suspect was in custody.

Navajo Nation spokesman Deswood Tome said the officer was shot in the face Saturday in Kaibeto and was in stable condition at a Flagstaff hospital.

The armed suspect barricaded himself after the shooting inside a home with an unknown number of children inside. Tome says authoritie­s were later able to apprehend him.
